Although known for their awesome beaches, Pensacola has become a hotbed for ice hockey. Pensacola loves their hockey team. The Ice Flyers were third in attendance with over 107,000 fans attending home games this season. The Ice Flyers won their third Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) championship in the past four years after defeating the Peoria Rivermen in game three of their best-of-five championship series. The series clinching game was won in dramatic fashion as Josh Cousineau flicked a backhanded shot with one second left in regulation for a 5-4 win in front of over 4,000 Pensacola fans.
Something that has probably never been done with the Stanley Cup, Ice Flyer players swam at Pensacola Beach with the SPHL President’s Cup.
